These days,
amplification is an essential part of any Dance Band. Dancers are
accustomed to the sound levels at other entertainments, and whilst we
would consider it inappropriate to operate at these levels, it is
necessary to be loud enough in order to be heard and create the right
atmosphere. To this end, we have a sophisticated sound system, able to
amplify the true ‘acoustic’ sound of our traditional instruments. The
fourth member of the band, Paul, is our dedicated sound engineer. It is
his job to ensure that the band sounds right, whatever the location and
that we, and the caller, are loud enough to be heard clearly at all times. |

For the technically
minded, we have a 24 channel Soundcraft mixing desk and a three way
Loudspeaker system; two floor mounted speakers to handle the very low
notes, 2 Bose 802 speakers on stands for the mid-range sounds and mounted
on top of these, two constant directivity horns for the very highest
pitched sounds. These enable us to direct the sound to where it is most
needed, the dance floor. The speakers are driven by amplifiers which can
achieve a peak power of 2kW, although average power is usually around 100
Watts. The peak power allows plenty of ‘headroom’ – again this helps
to preserve the natural sounds of the instruments without distortion |
