Thoughts and Reflections on the Game
A fairly simple game this one. My opponent, Simon, kindly decided to narrow the battlefield by placing the river which allowed me to use the BUA plus E option to secure the other flank. I placed it as I did to minimise the chance of a flank march which I suspected may happen. This, in Simon's opinion, forced him to fight on a fairly narrow frontage.
Personally I felt that the river was a mistake on his part as he had the more mobile army and any reduction of frontage would only benefit me. Additionally, in my experience you can usually ignore troops on the far side of a river for a good deal of a game, more so if they are of an irregular or allied command where they cannot be given high PIP rolls.
I was also surprised by the fielding of such a large Saka command, only 2 Greek generals and no Reg Cv(S). These combined with the unutilised Bw(I) cut down on some of the armies main strengths.
On my part I was happy to form the Pk(S) in two ranks and the Pk(O) in 3 when fighting Kn, especially Kn(F). The resilience of these troops at +5(S) and +6(O) effectively requires the opponent to roll up 4 to beat you, more when the overlaps kick in. The defensive position allowed me to easily cover the flanks of the pike.
I also learnt that Hd(O) are a cheap and effective way of keeping LH out of the action; and at 1AP playing 5AP I was not at all bothered about losing a few.
All in all, whilst it was pleasing to win without losing a single element this was not a challenging game.
