MODEL
MARINAS |
|
|
|
The Morris Marina has appeared in a
surprising number of models, mainly from UK-based manufacturers, but it
took thirty years to get a decent metal model made.

Airfix |
|
|
|
The Airfix 1:32nd scale plastic kit
was introduced in 1972.These kits were extremely well detailed for the
time with full modelled running gear, engine and transmission and a
fully detailed engine bay.
The Marina TC kit used the engine from the MGB kit
but it was coupled to a scale Marina gearbox.
The kits were only made for a short time and then
Airfix changed direction, producing some wierd and wonderful 'Custom'
kits and concentrating on their Military ranges.
These kits are very, very rare today and command
quite high prices. An unmade kit like the one shown could cost £75+
from a dealer.
It would be nice to hope Airfix could reintroduce
the range of 60's and 70's cars they once had, but is is very doubtful.

CORGI |
|
|
|
Corgi were very quick off the mark
with their Morris Marina coupe, introducing it in 1971 in approximate
1/43rd scale. It was marred by two things; the choice of wheels
(Whizzwheels) and the colours, a metallic lime green and red. Otherwise,
the model wasn't too bad, being fairly accurate in length and height but
slightly too 'fat'.
Once again, the manufacturer changed tack
immdeiately after launching this car and produced all larger scale
models in the off-kilter 1/36th scale. The models were made until approx
1973 when production ceased.
These are quite common models, with condition
ranging from dire to immaculate and prices to match, but the upper end
of the market has been stable for many years at about £35-£45
for a mint in box version of either colour.
Main problems with these cars are the windows which
become very fragile and at the moment are irreplaceable, but I suspect
someone will do a vacuum-formed set one day.
The rarest version of these cars are the
pre-production Leyland Dealership version in Blaze Orange with a black
interior and silver steering wheel. Only made for BL, they now command
high prices; the last one seen on the internet sold for £136,
unboxed!

Vanguards
|
|
|
|
There was great excitement when it was announced
that Corgi Vanguards were going to produce the Morris Marina in their
true-to-scale 1:43rd range and the cars in the metal replicate the
original very well, apart from a couple of panel lines and a slight
cock-up with the tampo printing on one of them. Prices new started at £11:99
but soon dropped to £9:99 and can be picked up for as little as £4:99
now. Modelauto have produced estate (station wagon), pick-up (ute/truck)
and van (panel) versions in resin to replace the cast metal ones for
about £16 a kit. Look under links for details. |

The above car is a bit of a mystery. It is
Vanguards number VA6305 in Blaze Red, as is the 'Hidden Treasures' but
you won't find it in any catalogues. It appears to have been a
production run that was only made available through Littlewoods Index
shops. The box this one came in was a different design to the usual
Vanguards style, it has a different registration number but the
certificate and 'Tax Disc' are as per the others.

Kit-Built
|
|
|
|
Morris Marina kits have mainly
concentrated on the commercial side, with two main leaders, mainly
Roxley Models with a 1/50th scale ITAL van and Streetscene with a 1/76th
scale Mk1 Marina van. Roxley used to do
ready-made vans in BT, BR and Post Office
colours as well as the kits. |

A new name in the market for 1/32nd
scale car kits, these are resin bodyshells of both Marina coupe and
saloon styles, with possibly an estate in the pipeline. the company
produces other 60's and 70's cars as well. |
