East Asian Attacks

The first noticeable fact when looking at the attack map for East Asia is, the high number of fatal attacks. Along with the Mediterranean region, East Asia has the highest fatality rate in the world, with a staggering 54% of all attacks, compared to the world average of around 15%. The latest reported fatal incidence for this area, was at Miyako in Northern Japan on 16th September 2000. To read more of this attack, see the news section in the attacks menu.
The island of Papua New Guinea suffers the worst, with almost 70 attacks officially recorded. Japan and the Philippines are next with 19 and 20 attacks respectively. What these numbers obviously do not take into account, is the amount of people who have lost their lives to sharks after maritime disasters, especially during the second world war, when many passenger ships were sunk at the hands of the Japanese and German U-boats and submarines.
