Australian & New Zealand Attacks

The waters off Australia and New Zealand are considered to be some of the most dangerous in the world, with Australia alone taking almost a third of the total attacks in the world. The situation has improved dramatically since the introduction of meshing on some of the beaches on the South Eastern coast in the 1930s, allowing the rates to drop to around ten percent of the world total in the last ten years. Australia fares worse then many other regions of the world for fatalities, with an approximate 1 in 5 rate. The coasts of New South Wales (including Sydney) and Southern Queensland (including Brisbane) suffer the most, followed
by the Great Barrier Reef and the Torres Strait. This trend is in relation to the number of people taking to the water, where the prime beach resorts are mainly found between Brisbane and Sydney. Australia is divided into North and South by the Tropic of Capricorn, with two thirds of all attacks occurring south of this line. These attacks are concentrated in the five warmest months between November and March. The remaining one third that occurs North of the Tropic of Capricorn are relatively evenly spread throughout the year where the main victims are divers as opposed to swimmers and surfers.
New Zealand shares the same pattern as Southern Australia, where nearly all attacks happen during November to April. The waters off Australia are a popular haunt of the Great White, coming only second to California, USA for recorded number of attacks, although some experts estimate that there are fewer than sixty Great Whites in Australian waters at any one time.

While New Zealand has seen very few attacks this century, Australia has seen some horrific, bizarre and well documented attacks, like the fatality of actress Marcia Hathaway and the strange 'Shark Arm Murder Case'.
