Guthrum
Hakason hails form the town of Hocecote in
the lands of the Wolf Clan, Nordlund. His
father Haka, was a confidant and friend of Gauk
Tharvolsson the Earl of Nordlund and chieftain of the Wolf Clan.
Haka also held the title of Wolfguard, the position of bodyguard for the
Wolf Clan leader. A prestigious position it nevertheless has its
drawbacks. The Wolfguard must always protect the clan leader, regardless
of danger to himself. If for any reason the clan chieftain dies first,
then the Wolfguard must also die to accompany his charge either to the
Drinking Halls or to the Lands of Shadow.
As a young warrior, Guthrum accompanied
his father to the Serpent Plains to
fight with the Wolf clan against Baron
Njal. Haka died at the side of Gauk Tharvolsson doing his duty as
Wolfguard. Guthrum was injured and carried away from the field of
battle by his clan brothers. Forced to flee the persecution of the
Wolves by Baron Njal, the clan and Guthrum fled overseas where he
recovered and followed a life of adventuring. On one of his travels he
chanced to meet a dwarf smith named Lanval whom he then accompanied for
many years until the dwarf was butchered by a group of mercenary orcs.
Alone again, Guthrum followed many
professions for the next few years, soldier, bodyguard and thief, until
in a tavern one evening he happened to meet a group of Wolf Clan members
who were setting sail for the Kingdom the next day. They informed
Guthrum that there was a new Baron, Morgrym and that as head of the Wolf
clan he had recalled the Wolves to their homelands.
The warrior returned to the Kingdom and
presented himself to Morgrym Kinslayer and
pledged the "Death Oath" to him as his Wolfguard. Guthrum has
now been ever present at the side of Morgrym for many years and is a
formidable warrior. When Morgrym abdicated and left the Kingdom for a
year Guthrum went with him to look for the Baron's wayward wife. It was
on a brief raid on a Mayan port that Guthrum was captured. The Mac
Allens fought their way back into the town once they had realized that
Guthrum was missing and rescued him, not before the Mayan's however had
tortured the warrior and had removed his tongue. High Priest Rillen has
offered to repair the wound with magic and give Guthrum his power of
speech back, but this the Wolfguard has steadfastly refused,
regarding the disfigurement as a punishment for his mistake of being
captured in the first place and leaving the Wolf Clan leader without his
Wolfguard.
