Dune
Released in 1992 by Cryo, this PC CD-ROM game is suprisingly good.
It's a kind of Role Playing Game, where the player takes the role
of Paul Atreides in his bid to rid Arrakis of the Harkonnens. Most
of the main characters in the book are in this game, as are many
of the events (The Duke's death, Paul falling in love with Chani, etc.)
Dune 2
This game pretty much started off a whole genre of computer games; the
RTS (Real Time Strategy) game. Wildly popular at the time, the objective is to control
Arrakis by beating off your opponents. You can choose to play three houses :
The "noble" Atreides, the "vicious" Harkonnens, or the "insidious" Ordos. Each house
has their own strengths and weakness, and comes complete with their own mentat to
advise you.
Dune 2000
Like Dune 2, your objective is wrest control of Arrakis by building up an
economy based on spice harvesting. You then buy an army to defeat the rival houses.
It's a run of the mill RTS enlivened
by many FMV cutscenes that follow the look of the film very closely. Many of the actors
copy their film counterparts, in particular the Harkonnen mentat.
He looks just like Brad Dourif (Peter De Vries) and even uses the same expressive hand gestures.
The Atreides mentat is similar to Freddie Jones' Thufir Hawat. Much of the graphics
resemble the vehicles seen in the film, such as the Spice harvester and Guild
"Hammer" space ship.
This game received unduly harsh reviews, in my opinion, mostly because
it's so similar to the Command and Conquer games. This attitude doesn't
make much sense considering that the C&C series was basically a development
of the game that started it all; Dune 2.
By no means an outstanding game, but not too bad either.
