Dune boasted a strong international
cast, with many fine performances. Patrick Stewart delivered a
solid role as Gurney Halleck, though like Richard Jordan (Duncan
Idaho) he was underused. Kenneth McMillan was wonderful as The
Baron, . The actors playing the Harkonnens seemed to enjoy
their roles much more than the austere, noble
Atreides. Sting does his best as Feyd-Rautha in the limited time
he is on screen - his celebrity appeal adding to the interest in
the film.
The scope and depth of the story didn't
allow much character development in the 2hr 17min theatrical
release, and the film only scratches the surface of most of the
characters in the book. Duke Leto Atreides (Jürgen Prochnow) is
perhaps the most dissappointing, with little time to convey the
tragic and devoted leader he is in the book. Francesca Annis
plays a strangely subdued Lady Jessica, and Everett McGill is not
the strong and charismatic Stilgar we had expected. Kyle
MacLachlan (Paul Atreides) and Sean Young (Chani) are adequate,
though hardly outstanding.
The film has often been criticised for
its wooden acting, though in fairness the book is also a serious
affair without much room for humour or horseplay.
