Monochrome Prints:
All monochrome prints are conventional,
darkroom produced, silver gelatin prints, which are meticulously
processed and then toned in Selenium to achieve archival permanence.
All work is hand printed by Hugh Milsom, who is recognized as
a master printer.
A master printer uses his skills to
control every aspect of print quality, achieving deep rich blacks
and subtle quality of detail in the lighter tones: he controls
the lightness and darkness of different areas of the print to
achieve a tonal balance and add mood to the picture. In some
areas, detail is subdued, whilst in other areas, detail is emphasized
to control the impact and the viewers reaction to the image.
This is the master printer's art, producing a photographic print
with an individual character and style: they can achieve a dramatic
richness and quality or the delicacy of a pencil sketch. No two
prints are alike - being hand printed they show minor and subtle
variations whilst maintaining the essential
character and mood of the image.
Colour Prints:
All colour prints are digitally produced
and printed using the latest generation pigment ink printers
that claim archival stability and longevity that exceeds that
of the highest quality, conventional colour prints.
The colour images are scanned from
the transparency to form a digital Photoshop file. This digital
file is then adjusted to give the maximum image quality from
the selected paper whether a gloss, matt or art surface. It is
emphasized that whilst each individual image shows Hugh's own
personal style and interpretation, it still maintains the integrity
with the original subject matter.
No file is manipulated to give a print
that is not faithful to the concept of the original landscape
- nothing has been added and only the most minor imperfections,
i.e. detritus, have been removed.
It is not generally appreciated that
different makes of photographic films record colours and contrast
differently. Digital imaging techniques allow the photographer
to make adjustments so that good colour rendition and detail
is gained throughout the image thus providing improved quality
compared with conventional colour prints. It is by fine adjustments
of the tint, tone shade and strength of the colour that hugh
achieves prints with a mood and atmosphere that are a mark of
his artistic perception and sensitivity
