Siren blaring about the Regs
31 Jan 2000

The long-awaited issue of Siren carrying an interview with The Regulars has finally appeared - and it features two live reviews as well.

The interview - conducted by the fanzine's editor Tracey at Scruffy Murphy's in the summer of 1999 - seems to put the band over quite well, at least when Pete stops talking and gives the other four a chance.

Highlights include Chris's frighteningly accurate interruption of Pete describing the composition of lyrics - "And sometimes you'll still be making them up when we get on stage" - and Stu's account of the Regs' formation - "I said 'I'll be your bass player' and I couldn't play anything".

One live review is of the support slot with Whistler, again back in the summer. Its author Demon Steve observes that 'it's difficult to criticise a band whose bass player wore a Belle & Sebastian T-shirt'. Nice to know we're doing something right.

The other - penned by Simon out of Crazyface - covers a Jug of Ale gig later in 1999, and features the verbal acrobatics frequently associated with NME writers of the early to mid-1990s. 'They've punctured Daytripper riffage in their sixth with pristine wah wah teeth and slick breakdowns'.

Our thanks to all three writers involved. Siren is available free of charge at Birmingham record shops and rehearsal studios, and also online.
