The way the century ends
27 Nov 1999

Excuse me while I blow my own trumpet, but The Regulars brought the curtain down on 1999's live schedule with two cracking performances in November, at the Jug of Ale and the Flapper.

On 11 November we appeared at the Moseley venue between Shamefaced and Parachute. The gig - promoted jointly by the Jug's Catapult Club and the top Birmingham fanzine Siren - was disappointingly attended, but a terrific job by the sound crew helped us produce a pop noise splendidly surging yet terrifically tight.

The new song October we take it back was given a debut - to great effect, I might add - and the set was rounded off with a scorching rendition of These things obscure.

For the Flapper gig on 26 November - billed as a Bearos Records night - we faced the daunting prospect of playing after Baxter and The Starries.

A crowd of about 70 piled into the venue, and under questioning from Zoot Promotions nearly 40 of these fine people admitted that they were there to see The Regulars. This represents the best turnout we've had for ages, and by golly you knew they were there.

Several of our most faithful supporters - some of whom have seen almost every gig The Regulars have played - declared this to be our finest ever performance. Fans and fellow band members alike agreed that Stu in particular played a real blinder. The highlights were probably Lie down and fight and Once you get past Habrough.

Our sticky, chocolate-covered thanks to all those who made it to on either or both nights.

We're now taking a couple of months off from gigging - hopefully to get the single done, and also to work on new stuff (a spunky, shouty, attitude-driven popsong called This is the sound is currently making its leisurely way through the Regulars pipeline). So the next gig will probably be at the Flapper on Saturday 12 February. Keep your eye on this site or join the Regulist for more details.
