Chops pops in Shrops
26 Feb 2001

The Regulars emerged last night from their first recording sessions in nine months with a three-track demo in anticipation of their next single.

Fuelled by a veggie fry-up from Pete, the band set off for the studio in rural Shropshire early on Saturday morning. Shrugging off icy conditions, foot and mouth disease, and the Worthington Cup final, they laboured all weekend at the recording - and it sounds all right.

The Savage Sounds studio was also used by the band for demo recordings in 1996, 1997 and 1998; and in the light of previous navigational difficulties The Regulars were satisfied to arrive on Saturday after only one wrong turn in Kidderminster and two in Bewdley.

An a-side will be chosen from the three tracks - Try, This is the sound and October we take it back - and then re-recorded to become a follow-up single to last year's debut Lie down and fight.

Particularly fine are Chopper's work on Sound - using his new sparkly guitar - and the band's cherished twinkly middle eight in October.

Though Chopper is the only Regular to support Birmingham City, the other four members stood by him throughout the Worthington Cup final. Sort of.

After struggling for some time to find a producer for the 2000 release, the Regs were pleased with the job eventually done by Gav Monaghan of Wolverhampton's Magic Garden studios.

Another contender has emerged, though, in the form of Mat the soundman from the Flapper - whose recent work with Brum bands Baxxter and The Starries has received favourable previews.

The picture should become clearer in March, when The Regulars also hope to confirm a label for the release.

In the meantime, the band return to the local live circuit later this week with a headline appearance at Birmingham's Flapper & Firkin on Thursday 1 March. See the next gig section for more details.
