Another sweltering August night in another Birmingham venue meant another top pop gig for The Regulars last night as an estimated 100 punters crammed into the Jug of Ale. The venue's 'Quids In' night - offering admission for just a pound, and lots of drinks for just a pound - has grown steadily in popularity since its introduction earlier this year; and the debut performance of glam-popsters Autolight - along with the Regs' growing popularity since the release last month of their debut single Lie down and fight - helped pack the place to the rafters. Proceedings began with a plaintive solo set from Simon Fox, of Brum's highly-regarded 'post-rock' outfit Grover - soon to record a Peel session - which stood up tremendously well, and was deservedly well received. The charismatic Autolight - cutting a Longpigs / Suede / Placebo kind of groove - turned in a set that would have been impressive in any circumstances - but for a debut gig it must be regarded as nothing short of sumptuous. Certainly one to look out for, once substitutes have been found for the members about to travel the world. Shortly after 10 o'clock The Regulars took the stage, kicking off with perhaps the fastest rendition yet of Lie down, and proceeding sublimely with new crowd favourite Today at last. Oldies but goldies 35 hours and University of rain both received a reprise, followed by a first airing for the new tune Lincolnshire skies - dedicated by Pete to former Grimsby Town and West Bromwich Albion manager Alan Buckley, who was sacked by the Mariners the previous day but whose involvement at the two clubs was instrumental in the friendship between Pete and Stu, and hence in the formation of The Regulars. The new composition - unlike some of Buckley's latter signings for Grimsby - was generously received by the audience despite its less-than-flawless execution. Despite another microphone / lead divorce, and Pete being temporarily blinded by the torrents of sweat rolling down his face, the remainder of the set proceeded to plan - and was greeted enthusiastically by another wonderfully receptive audience. The Regulars have spoken of their gratitude to said audience, and would like it placed on record that they don't mind people sitting on the floor. "Especially if they're knackered from work," added Paul. Next up for the Regs are their ArtsFest2000 date on Sunday 10 September and the Bearos Records birthday bash two weeks later, on 24 September. For more details keep watching the skies. |
