Sultan of slack
19 Feb 2001

Just months after he dropped out of the rat race to return to full-time education - as full-time as a BA in English ever gets, anyway - whizzkid guitar genius Rob 'Chopper' Harris has made another pitch for Paul Roach's title of laziest Regular.

This time, Chops has taken the extreme measure of acquiring a new guitar simply to make his journey to band practice easier.

After the bespectacled maestro quit his job last summer, he took up a place in UCE's halls of residence - leaving his prized Rickenbacker at his parents' place for security reasons, and collecting it before practice on Monday nights.

As the round trip from Handsworth Wood to Winson Green via Bearwood proved too much for the idle-arsed Harris, however, he simply swapped his acoustic for a Gretsch solid-bodied electric that he could keep in his halls room and hence cut out one leg of the odyssey.

The new instrument's lovely red glittery finish proved a particular hit with Regulars singer Pete, whose penchant for stuff sparkly has recently found its way into the stage act in the form of girly hairclips and such like.

It remains to be seen whether Harris willl succumb to the pressure he is bound to face to use his sparkly six-string on stage - but his reputation as slacker extraordinaire continues to grow.
