The Regulars and Birmingham city council are to exchange contracts this week on the band's ArtsFest2000 slot - at no less a venue than the city's well-known version of Ronnie Scott's. And a September holiday for the drummer, in somewhere hot, means that those turning up to see the Regs at this year's free festival will witness a rare acoustic set featuring the other four Regulars. The only previous occasions the band have played unplugged were in September 1999 - the first on the final evening of last year's ArtsFest, following a full-band appearance earlier the same day; and another, two weeks later - both at the Flapper & Firkin. The first of these - featuring the only public performance to date of the Regs' 1997 song Yesterday's birthday girl - had Bearos Records' Alan Farmer leaping with excitement and planning to release it as a live CD. This year's ArtsFest - running on the weekend of 8-10 September - will be Birmingham's third since the event's launch in 1998. Having already become the largest free festival of its kind in the UK, ArtsFest now offers over 200 events of all kinds across the city centre. Sunday 10 September will see The Regulars' drum-free turn, with the band already relishing the challenge of rendering newer material such as This is the sound in acoustic form. Keep an eye on this site for more details closer to the time - or join the growing number of hep cats who know that the Regulist is where is at, baby. |
