Sunny
afternoon Birmingham copped for an Indian summer on Sunday as the third and final day of ArtsFest2000 saw the city's Bearos Records contingent emerge into sunshine for four diverse and entertaining live sets. These reached a climax with The Starries' Flapper & Firkin appearance - billed as their last with current drummer Steve before a change in musical direction, though further details are still awaited. Earlier in the day Grover and Jameson delivered thoroughly absorbing programmes on the big stage in Centenary Square - the latter introduced, to great effect, by Midlands Today legend Nina Nannar. Things got under way, however, shortly after 4:30pm with an enforced acoustic set from The Regulars, whose drummer Chris was away somewhere even hotter - though probably less groovy - on holiday. Problems with Chopper's guitar meant a delay to the set and a weird sound through the opening tune October we take it back; but the band struggled gamely on to turn out a lilting Lincolnshire skies, a twinkly, triangle-enhanced Try, and a lovely Lie down and fight - not to mention a yearning Yesterday's birthday girl. Bearos bloke the Doc captured the performance on minidisc; and, technical gubbins permitting, we hope to bring you some excerpts via this website very soon. Another celebration of all things Bearos ensues later this month, when the label celebrates its second birthday with a bit of a do at Birrmingham's Custard Factory on Sunday 24 September. Five bands are scheduled to appear, and DJs too. See the gigs page for more. |
