Stu quits
10 Apr 2001

Five years after he played a leading role in the formation of The Regulars, charismatic bassist Stu Fletcher has decided to quit the band.

Stu's shock news was revealed at a practice last month to the rest of the band, who elected to keep it under wraps until after their Reading gig on March 31. The bassist officially confirmed his intentions earlier today.

His motives appear to stem from a disinclination to make the step up to releasing more records and playing more out-of-town gigs, and from a general dissatisfaction with The Regulars - although there is no question of any animosity surrounding his departure.

After declining two immediate offers to hook up with other bands, Stu is not expected to persist with his musical career.

This month's recording sessions for the next Regulars single will go ahead as planned following Stu's offer to remain and play on the tracks - but it appears that this Friday's Flapper & Firkin gig will be the Baggie Bassist's last.

The four remaining Regulars have made initial enquiries as to a replacement, but stress that these are at a very early stage. Interested parties should email bass@theregulars.co.uk.

Stu is perhaps best loved by Regs fans for his legendary shouty backing vocals on the band's debut single Lie down and fight - but his instrumental prowess on such tracks as Today at last and Once you get past Habrough mean his shoes will not be easy to fill.

In the next few days we hope to bring you on this website an official statement from Stu, and reaction from fans and other band members.

For the moment, your comments and tributes to the Man of Bulging Pockets can be left on the guestbook.

Amid all the questions being asked as the dust settles from Stu's bombshell, one thing is certain: the Good Friday gig will be something pretty damn special.
