Sound
start Nearly four months after their previous live outing, The Regulars returned to the stage last Friday in a successful debut for new bassist Richard Banner. The band headlined to a mostly full Jug of Ale after wonderful, if divergent, sets from Leicester's M J Hibbett and local Moog newbies Grandscope. After a first ever opening slot for They built over the traino got the Regs' set off to a high-tempo start, the recent live favourite Try stamped it with a hallmark of pop. During the third number Today at last the band released into the crowd 80-odd special balloons, some of which were glittery, and all of which were filled with their own sweet breath. Shortly afterwards, the new song The ballad of bad TV - featuring some deeply funky shit from the boy Banner - received its own debut, to good effect. Another highlight came with a truly manic guest vocal on last year's debut single Lie down and fight, from Mr Geordie of Birmingham's hardcore pop anarchists The Starries. All the while, a shadowy new cult of Regulars fans - consisting entirely of girls dressed as Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany's - had been strutting its stuff down the front. And when the band broke into new single This is the sound to close the set, the Irregulars - as they are believed to be known - led a second successive Regs stage invasion. Notwithstanding Paul's distress at his Metalzone pedal being repeatedly stood upon during the quiet bits, The Regulars have declared themselves flattered and delighted by such polite enthusiasm. Rich was generally considered to have justified his position, with Pete slipping into Chammy Manager parlance to opine that he 'finished on a 7'. The band's next live appearances are at ArtsFest2001 on Saturday 15 September - a first ever outdoor gig for The Regulars - and the Flapper & Firkin a week later. Watch the gigs page for updates.
