| Idle worship 08 Jan 2001 The Regulars had a right old tinselly time of it last month, with the Bearos Records Christmas gig ushering in the festive season in style. And after playing their second acoustic set of the year at the Jug of Ale-based Chrimbo bash, normal service is resumed this weekend with a headline slot at the Flapper. Except for headliners Herman Dune, each band on the bill was asked to play one of their own tunes and one Christmas song. With the help of a synthesiser - kindly loaned by Mr C Baker of Blackheath - and Pete's Ikea percussion set, the Regs set about creating seasonal twinkliness galore. Today at last - which once went under a working title of 'Christmas song' - acquired a chiming bell sound and sleigh bells. For the Regs' pared-down rendition of In the bleak mid-winter Stu's and Paul's parts sat wonderfully with triangle and lo-fi-sounding church organ stuff to melt cynical hearts. For many, though, the highlight of the evening - which also featured Grover and Crazyface - came early with Baxxter's comic trombone-powered interpretation of 'Silent night'. Photos from the night's proceedings - including a rather beautiful one of The Regulars - can be found on the Bearos site. The next live outing for Bearwood's finest comes on Saturday 13 January - a headliner at the Flapper and Firkin with Harajuka and Distophia. See the gigs page for more stuff about it. |
