Business as usual

The Regs did everything they do, to good effect, at last Sunday's Bearos Records night here in their home city - part of BBC Radio 1's much-feted One Live in Birmingham week.

Jaded from sitting around for six hours and concerned that they might suffer from the truncated setlist and dearth of soundcheck, the band nevertheless turned in a performance to lift the spirits of the Custard Factory crowd.

Pete reported with some satisfaction that the final song Pop box 9:30 appeared to cast a palpable vibe of happiness over the audience, greeted as it was with a broad array of smiling faces. A new, as yet untitled Regulars tune, meanwhile, made a smouldering appearance midway through the seven-song set and showed great promise.

The band were again joined by Geordie out of The Starries for shouty guest vocals on Lie down and fight, and last year's debut single was followed in the set by the climactic new release This is the sound, which always goes down well because it is loud.

An audience already delighted by great sets from Ogs Bunkadoo Band and Grover, among others, were then left to drool over The Starries, who did not disappoint.

The Regulars, having fulfilled their purpose of playing their stuff and making people feel good, went home happy to prepare for their next gig, at the Jug of Ale on Wednesday 14 November.

The Radio 1 people have now left the city. Most gigs cost three quid to get into again. Everything is back to normal.
